Cuellar Elementary Students Treated to a Shopping Spree

Courtesy Yvette Treviño,

(Laredo, Texas)-One hundred lucky students from Cuellar Elementary School visited Target early this morning to participate in a mini-shopping spree funded by the Heroes and Helpers Grant.

Target staff and Laredo Police Department Officers lined the streets to welcome the students with high fives. Students participating in this event ranged from Kindergarten age to Fifth Grade. The Gonzalez Middle School Drum Line under the direction of Carlos Miranda provided entertainment for the event. Students could be seen smiling from ear to ear.

Upon entering the store students were paired up with a police officer that accompanied them and assisted them with their shopping. Students could be seen picking out toys, jackets, and even backpacks.

The Heroes and Helpers Grant is a grant opportunity Target initiated in 1990 to bridge local law enforcement agencies together with local community organizations and public schools together. The purpose of this grant is to help individual communities make strides towards fostering a positive relationship between citizens and their local law enforcement agencies. This is the second year in a row Cuellar Elementary School has been awarded this amazing opportunity through this grant. “This is a great opportunity for our students and we are very excited for them,” said Melissa Shinn, Principal at Cuellar Elementary School.
