(Laredo, Texas)-United ISD School Counselors were recognized this morning by City of Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz, as the week of February 6-10, 2017 has been designated as “National School Counseling Week.” Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), National School Counseling Week helps to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems. Mayor Saenz issued a proclamation which honors the District’s over 100 counselors serving the needs of United ISD students from elementary, middle, and high school.

“On behalf of our Board of Trustees, I would like to thank our school counselors for the work that they do,” said United ISD Superintendent Roberto J. Santos. “National School Counselors Week highlights the tremendous impact that our school counselors have in advancing our students’ scholastic success and in preparing them to lead successful lives.”

Indeed, school counselors have a number of duties at their campus, such as: helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests, and talents; partnering with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world; focusing on positive ways to enhance students’ social/personal, educational, and career development; and working with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic, and optimistic aspirations for themselves.

“I wholeheartedly believe the lives of our students are enlightened because of the work that we do,” said United ISD Director of Guidance and Counseling Christina Uribe Flores. “We work with all students to help remove barriers to learning and address their needs and concerns. We also provide our students with career awareness education, post-secondary options, as well as personal and social skills.”

Professional school counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in guidance and counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the educational system.

According to the ASCA, more than 100,000 school counselors nationwide will be participating in the week’s festivities. Many school districts will be hosting special events and activities to call attention to the myriad benefits of a comprehensive school counseling program.

United ISD parents who have specific questions or concerns about school counseling programs may contact their child’s school counselor at their respective campus.
