(Laredo, Texas)-One deserving United Engineering and Technology Magnet school student will receive a $60,000 scholarship to St. Mary’s University in San Antonio as part of placing first place on the SA BEST Competition. The official application for the scholarship was delivered by Ms. Jacky Briseño, St. Mary’s University Admission Counselor to all qualifying magnet students at the Longhorn Library.
The SA BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology) competition is a contest held annually to inspire and expose students to areas of science and engineering. With guidance from adult mentors, local teams of students designed and built a remote controlled robot to accomplish a specific task. The students are given a box of raw materials from which to build the machine and 6 weeks to design and construct it. The task of the robot is kept secret until kick-off day, when all the teams are told what the robot is required to do. On competition day, all schools compete head-on with each other in a thrilling science-fair-turned-sports-event.
