Agreement Reached for Trash Pickup

Webb County as has entered into an inter-local agreement with the City of Laredo to provide solid waste services in the city’s extra-territorial jurisdiction (EJT) area.

Concerns were raised recently when it was discovered that the county had no authority to provide solid waste services in the ETJ of a municipality without an inter-local or cooperative agreement. For years, Webb County has been providing the service, but without an inter-local agreement in place.

“We are thankful to the City of Laredo for taking action regarding this matter to ensure that services are not interrupted to the affected residents,” said Webb County Judge Tano Tijerina.

Webb County Commissioners will meet on Monday and discuss the possibility of extending existing county services in the ETJ and include those areas in the mandatory solid waste management plan scheduled to take effect October 1 when county solid waste services will convert from a free service to a contracted, paid utility service.

“At the end of the day it’s about the health of our community,” Tijerina said. “We can now move forward and provide the services needed by the residents and ensure that they enjoy the quality of life that they deserve.”
