The Youth Science Leaders of Laredo (YSLL), hosted their premier press conference at the entrance of the Imaginarium of South Texas in Mall Del Norte. The YSLL is comprised of students from local public and private schools who are interested in medicine, engineering, mathematics and technology. The group was founded in July of 2015 by United High School students (and YSLL co-presidents), Robert Ponce and Anthony Martinez. Ponce indicated that the organization is working hard to expand their current roster of 35 members. “We invite students ages 12 and up who have a scientific mindset to join us. Our group has the support and resources to help students develop their potential through science-related activities”, said Ponce.

Early proponents of the YSLL include Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz, City Council District 6 representative Charlie San Miguel, South Texas Food Bank, and the Imaginarium of South Texas. A few moments of the press conference were dedicated to thanking Dr. Tarik Tashtoush, a systems engineer and professor at TAMIU whose valuable input and
participation continue to propel the growth of the organization. “The objective of our organization is to provide science minded students with access to technology and experiences that will help them become great contributors to our world”, said Tastoush. “These students are a bright league of young scientists”, he added.
Students who are interested in joining YSLL are urged to take part in the first annual Youth Science Day , scheduled for Saturday, June 25, 2016, from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the South Texas Imaginarium located inside Mall
Del Norte near Dillard’s department store. The event will offer science – related activities for students of all ages and feature science/community guests who will speak about the positive impact of scientific knowledge on our community.
