Last year, the University welcomed the Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán as its first Artists in Residence to lead its first International Mariachi Workshop, which attracted scores of mariachi music students from local and surrounding area junior and senior high schools. At the culmination of the Workshop, student performers joined their Mariachi music masters in a stirring concert performance.

This year’s International Mariachi Music Workshop, scheduled April 28-29, will again feature the Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán at TAMIU. Over 300 local and regional students will join in sectional and private lessons and group critiques lead by Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán’s musical director, Fernando Martínez and the entire Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán. The students will vie for scholarship opportunities and perform in a rousing finale concert with Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán.

Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán was founded in 1965 by brothers Pepe Martínez Barajas and Fernando Martínez Barajas, and toured Latin America and the U.S. A second generation of musicians joined the 12-piece traditional Mexican group during the 1980s and 1990s — Fernando Martínez, Jr. and Carlos Martínez among them. In 1997, Fernando Martínez Barajas’ son, Angel Martínez Arreguin, became Tecalitlán’s leading member. Just this week, the group dealt with the death of icon, uncle and godfather to many Tecalitlán members, Don Jose “Pepe” Martinez.
