(Laredo, Texas)-The much anticipated return and new concert by one of México’s most revered mariachi music groups, the Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán de Guadalajara, is Saturday, April 30 at 8 p.m. at the Laredo Independent School District’s Civic Center, 2400 San Bernardo Avenue. Generous sponsorship for the event has been provided by IBC Bank with additional support from Uni-Trade.

The performance, dubbed De México Para El Mundo, is a scholarship benefit for Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students. Tickets are $50, $35 and $25 each and are available at Ticketmaster outlets and at the door.

Last year, the University welcomed the Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán as its first Artists in Residence to lead its first International Mariachi Workshop, which attracted scores of mariachi music students from local and surrounding area junior and senior high schools. At the culmination of the Workshop, student performers joined their Mariachi music masters in a stirring concert performance.

This year’s International Mariachi Music Workshop, scheduled April 28-29, will again feature the Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán at TAMIU. Students will join in sectional and private lessons and group critiques lead by Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán’s musical director, Fernando Martínez and the entire Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán. They will also compete for special scholarship opportunities and perform in concert with Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán.

The legendary Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán was founded in 1965 by brothers Pepe Martínez Barajas and Fernando Martínez Barajas, and toured Latin America and the U.S. A second generation of musicians joined the 12-piece traditional Mexican group during the 1980s and 1990s — Fernando Martínez, Jr. and Carlos Martínez among them.
In 1997, Fernando Martínez Barajas’ son, Angel Martínez Arreguin, became Tecalitlán’s leading member.
