LISD to Continue Free Meals for 2009-2010 School Year

The LISD Child Nutrition Program (CNP) will continue to offer free meals to all LISD students for the upcoming 2009-2010 school year, announced Margaret Lopez, LISD Director for Child Nutrition. All LISD school cafeterias will be offering nutritious breakfast and lunch meals at no charge to LISD students.

The CNP will also offer students, who may still be hungry, the opportunity to purchase extra food. The CNP has released the school lunch menu for August and September for LISD pre-k and elementary students. More information on LISD school lunch menus and prices for individual meal items are posted at the school cafeterias’ and the CNP web page at www.laredoisd.org.

For the 2009-2010 school year, two new amendments have been added to The Texas Public School Nutrition Policy Amendment. First, high schools may not serve or provide access for students to Foods of Minimum Nutritional Value (FMNV) and all other forms of candy at any time on school premises until the end of the last scheduled class. This rule is already in existence for elementary and middle schools. FMNV includes carbonated beverages, ice pops, chewing gum, as well as some candy. Second, when candy bars and packaged candies are allowed after the end of the school day on LISD property, they must comply with the Healthy Food and Beverage Options adopted by the LISD School Health Advisory Council.

The CNP prepares all meals at each school with the exception of schools without a kitchen. Schools without kitchens have their meals prepared at other LISD school kitchens.

Also, the CNP provides adult meals to all LISD employees. Adult meal prices are $2.00 for breakfast and $3.00 for lunch. Additional items may be purchased at a la carte pricing.
