Univision Laredo in Partnership with Sheriff Martin Cuellar Recognizes Local Student

Campaign encourages community to recognize a young leader in the community
(Laredo, TX ) – Univision Laredo and Sheriff Martin Cuellar congratulate Jose Calderon a 7th grade student at Harmony Science Academy School for being recognized as the “September 2015 Estrella de la Comunidad.”
Jose was nominated for going above and beyond for the most in need of our community. This past Mother’s Day he distributed flowers to the elderly mothers at the local Carlos Ritcher Housing Authority community. “My grandmother lives around there and I thought what about all the mothers who are alone and don’t get a visit or present. So I decided to give them a little something,” said Jose.
Jose is part of the Robotics Team at Harmony Science Academy where he has won first and second place awards at state level competitions, is part of the National Jr. Honor Society, is captain of the basketball team, and is leader at his church youth group. He also donates his free time at the public library where he teaches other children and participates in a Robotics Team which competes at a local and state level.
“It’s awesome to be recognized for my hard work. I don’t do it for the recognition because I believe that if you have the willingness to do something and can do it you should. I thank my family and most importantly God who have blessed me with this recognition,” said Calderon, Award Recipient. Calderon plans to attend college and become a Robotics Engineer.
Students can be nominated by their teachers, counselors, coaches, parents, friends and/or family by logging on to http://www.kldotv.com/promocion/estrella-de-la-comunidad/ and completing the nomination form. They must be in good academic standing and attend a local high school or middle school. Students must be 14-18 years old.
Univision Laredo along with Sheriff Martin Cuellar take pride in this new initiative with the intent to promote leadership skills, community involvement, and good academic performance.
Jose received an Estrella de la Comunidad trophy and certificate award, Great American Cookie cake, $50 coupon to Laredo Pizza Factory, $50 gift card to Wal-Mart, and tablet courtesy of Best Buy.
