PEDRO “PETE” ALVAREZ APPOINTED AS TxDOT LAREDO DISTRICT ENGINEER

LAREDO, TX – Texas Department of Transportation Director of Urban and Rural District Operations Randy Hopmann, P.E., announces the selection of Pedro “Pete” Alvarez, P.E., as Laredo District Engineer, effective August 17, 2015.

In his new role, Alvarez will oversee the planning, designing, building, operation and maintenance of the state transportation system for the eight-county Laredo District. He has served as Deputy District Engineer for the Pharr District since 2013.

A 20-year TxDOT veteran, Alvarez officially began his career with the department in 1995. He was a conditional grant recipient and worked as a summer employee in 1993 and 1994, and joined the department in 1995 as an engineering assistant at the Pharr District Design Section. In 1997, Alvarez rotated to the District Laboratory and then the Pharr Area Office later that year. During his decade of service at the Pharr Area Office, he served as the Design and Construction Engineer. He was selected as the Assistant Area Engineer in March 2005.

From June 2007 to August 2013, Alvarez served as the Director of Maintenance, where he was responsible for overseeing the district’s maintenance program. In 2008 and 2010, he was responsible for the District Command Center operations for Hurricanes Dolly and Alex. In addition, Alvarez was actively involved with several state initiatives including committees, work groups and research. In August 2013, he was selected as the Deputy District Engineer and has been responsible for overseeing its day-to-day operations.

Alvarez graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in December 1994 and received his Professional Engineer’s license in July 1999. He served as Team Leader, Mentor and Director of Oversight for the Pharr District’s Engineering Assistant Group since 1999. He also enjoys sports and outdoor activities including hunting, fishing and camping. He and his wife Mary have three children: Diego, Daniela and Pablo.
