PENA EARNS PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

DURHAM, NC- The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, has announced that Sioux Falls Canaries INF Jerome Pena (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Player of the Week for the week ending August 9.

Pena was 8-for-20 (.400) at the plate this week, highlighted by a four-hit game. He had one double and drove in four. Pena started his week with the four-hit game, a 4-for-5 night on Wednesday at the Grand Prairie AirHogs. He had a double and drove in two as the Canaries fell 13-4. The next night, Pena went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored as Sioux Falls got back in the win column with an 8-3 triumph. The Canaries dropped Friday’s series finale 8-7, but Pena went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, another RBI, and a walk. The arrival of the weekend saw the Canaries take on the Sioux City Explorers, and Pena went 1-for-4 on Saturday in a 2-1 loss. He closed the week with a 1-for-5 game that included a run scored on Sunday as the Explorers won 9-4.

Pena is now batting .300 (78-for-260) on the season with 12 doubles, four triples and three home runs. He has collected 28 RBI.

This is the first season in independent ball for Pena, who previously spent four seasons with the Baltimore Orioles organization. He was with Class A Advanced Frederick for parts of three seasons (2012-2014). Pena hit .288 in 2012 between three different teams, his best season as a pro. Before being drafted in the 38th round in 2011, Pena played collegiately at Texas Christian University.
