City of Laredo District III Council Member Alex Perez, Jr., Assistant City Manager Horacio De Leon, Ronnie Acosta, Director, Community Development Department and staff, as well as representatives from other community organizations, including Neighborhood Works and Habitat for Humanity were on hand to officially cut the ribbon for the Romero Family Rehabilitation Home Reconstruction.

The Laredo City Council is committed to improving the housing stock in our community and provide residents with safe, decent and affordable housing.  The Romero family home was dilapidated beyond repair and this left the family in desperate need of housing assistance.

This project is funded through the Community Development Block Grant, which will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year.  These funds are provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through the City of Laredo’s Housing Rehabilitation Program.

The program provides a 0% interest loan over a 15 year period; the amounts are determined on a case by case basis.  To maintain the limits affordable, 57% of the loan is payable in 180 monthly installments and 43% is forgiven as long as the homeowner continues to occupy the premises for the period of the loan.  100% forgivable loans are also available for people who are 62 years of age and/or disabled head of households and who qualify with incomes of 60% or less of the housing median family income.

The Romero’s home design was created by architect Telissa Molano from Redline Architecture and constructed by R&A Construction of Laredo, TX.  The home is 1,187 square feet in size consisting of three bedrooms, two baths, a combined kitchen, living and dining area and one laundry closet with central air-conditioning and heating.  The total construction project cost is $90,852.

Donations from Habitat for Humanity and personal donations by Community Development Department staff helped to furnish the home for the Romero family.

Mr. & Mrs. Herman and Margarita Roman were joined by their daughters and grandchildren for this special event.
