July 30, 2009-Laredo, TX-The Laredo Broncos’ offense could only muster two hits, as they lost to the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings by a score of 2-0 at Veterans Field, on Thursday.
The first five innings of the game were dominated by the starting pitchers of both clubs, as the game was scoreless heading to the sixth. Luis Arroyo for the Broncos gave up four hits, walked no one, and struck out four in his first five. Juan Peralta was just as good for the WhiteWings, as he gave up two hits, walked two, and struck out five in his first five innings. Peralta left the game after those five innings for an unknown reason as Juan Diaz came into the game.
The WhiteWings were the first team to score in the seventh inning. Welinson Baez led off with a double. Then with one out, Alberto Cruz reached on a throwing error by third baseman Andres Santos, that allowed Cruz to reach second and Baez to reach third. Sandy De Leon then singled in Baez and moved Cruz to third. Casey Allen then reached on a fielder’s choice, which allowed Cruz to score. That gave Rio Grande Valley the 2-0 lead.
Luis Arroyo left the game for Laredo after seven solid innings. He gave up two runs, none of them earned, on seven hits. He walked no one and struck out six. Julio Pinto came in to pitch the eighth.
Pinto pitched two scoreless innings, as the Broncos headed to the bottom of the ninth down by two runs. Julio Santana came into the game for the WhiteWings to close out the game.
The Broncos did nothing against Santana as he picked up the save. Laredo lost the game by a score of 2-0.
The Broncos scored 0 runs on 2 hits and had 1 error while the WhiteWings scored 2 runs on 8 hits and had 0 errors.
The Broncos are now 17-31 on the season while the WhiteWings are 23-25. The Broncos will next be in action Fridday July 31st, as they play the first of a four game series against the Costal Bend Thunder at 7:30.
