CONGRATULATIONS to the United South High School Chess Club for advancing to Nationals!!!

(Laredo, Tx)-This year marks the second year the United South High School Chess team wins the Texas Scholastic JV Chess meet.  With a total of 22 points, the Mighty Panthers dominated the rest of the field of over 20 teams and hundreds of competitors.  They swept with 1st place in regionals and State and are now advancing to Nationals in San Diego California!

 Members of the Championship Varsity Division include: Noe Fernandez receiving Honorable Mention award, and  Kevin Gueta competed against Master level chess players.

 In the JV Division, recipients of Honorable Mentions were awarded to Adan Gonzalez (4points), Jesus Moreno (4.5 points), 2nd place – Mario Olguin (6 pts.), 6th place – Joseph Filazzola (5.5 pts.), 8th place – Luis Luna (5.5 pts.), 11th place – Alberto Barbosa (5 pts.), 15th place – Albert Aguirre (5pts.), 17th place – Edgardo Tejada (5 pts.), and 18th place-Karina Cortez (5 pts.)

 The team’s points are calculated by the highest four members’ scores in each team; however, after each every victory each player has the opportunity to take points from other teams participating in competition.  The USHS Chess Club team point contributors included: Mariel Morales, Kassandra Lopez, Jessica Rodriguez, Jacob Hernandez, Luis Arriaga, Ernesto Lerma, and Lizbeth Resendiz.

 “This was total team effort and everyone’s contributions are extremely necessary,” stated Ramiro Garza, Chess Club Mentor.
