BRONCOS DOOMED BY 8TH INNING IN AMARIILO

Amarillo, TX-The Laredo Broncos gave up eight runs in the eighth inning, as they lost to the Amarillo Dillas by a score of 9-5 at Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa, on Sunday.

The starters were in control early on in the game, as it was scoreless through the first four innings.  Broncos’ starter Will Palmer had allowed five hits through his four innings.  He did not walk a batter and struck out two.  Justin Phillips only allowed one hit through his four innings.  He walked three batters and struck out two.

The Broncos finally got to Phillips in the fifth.  Andres Santos led off with a single and then went to third on a double by OJ Garza.  Jaime Morales followed with a rbi single scoring Santos and advancing Garza to third.  Ryan Flynn then hit a groundout that scored Garza.  That made the score 2-0 in favor of Laredo.

Laredo’s starter Will Palmer was taken out of the game after six innings of work.  He gave up no runs on seven hits.  He walked only one batter and struck out two.  Jason Herman came in and allowed two base runners with two outs, so the Broncos brought in Carlos Alvarez.  Keanon Simon greeted Alvarez with a rbi single scoring Justin Wenger.  The throw by left fielder Mario Mendez got by the Broncos catcher Luany Sanchez allowing Willie James to go to third and Simon to second.  The Broncos then brought in Fernando Rijo, who got Andrew Wong to groundout to end the inning.  The score was now 2-1.

The Broncos added some insurance in the eighth inning.  Luis Ugueto walked and then after a sacrifice bunt moved to second.  Mario Mendez then singled moving Ugueto to third.  Justin Phillips, the Dillas starter was then taken out of the game for reliever Andy Noonan.  Argelis Nunez came to the plate and delivered a two run double, scoring both Ugueto and Mendez.  Then with two outs Andres Santos doubled in Nunez.  That gave Laredo a 5-1 lead.

The Dillas made the game interesting in the bottom of the eighth against Rijo.  Carlos Figueroa walked to start the inning.  Terrance McClain then reached on an error when Ryan Flynn couldn’t handle a double play ball.  After a strikeout, Stantrel Smith hit a two run triple.  Eric Brown then followed with a rbi single scoring Smith.  Justin Wenger followed with another single moving Brown to second.  That was it for Rijo as the Broncos brought in the closer Franklyn Gracesqui.  The Dillas pulled off a double steal, so the Broncos walked Willie James to load the bases.  Keanon Simon hit a sacrifice fly scoring Brown and tying the game.  Andrew Wong followed with a rbi single scoring Wenger.  Wong was caught in a run down between first and second, during the rundown Robert Moron made a bad throw that allowed Wong to make it to second and James to score.  Carlos Figueroa followed with a rbi single scoring Wong.  That was it for Gracesqui as Julio Pinto came in.  Terrance McClain hit a rbi triple scoring Figueroa.  That eight run inning made the score 9-5 in favor of Amarillo.

Laredo went quietly in the top of the ninth as the Dillas came from behind for a 9-5 victory.

The Broncos scored 5 runs on 9 hits and had 3 errors while the Dillas scored 9 runs on 14 hits and had 0 errors.

The Broncos are now 15-29 on the season while the Dillas are 24-20.  The Broncos will next be in action Monday July 27th, as they play the first of a four game series against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings at 7:30.  You can listen to that game and all 80 Broncos games this year on our website www.laredobroncos.com through our partners at www.sportsujuice.com.
