Laredo Police Warn Against Celebratory Gun Fire on New Year’s Eve

lightspoliceCourtesy Joe Baeza,

(Laredo, Tx)-As we near the end of the year the Laredo Police Department reminds the community to spread the word amongst friends, family and neighbors to never fire a gun into the air under any circumstances. Fired projectiles (bullets) that are fired into the atmosphere return back to the earth with similar speeds as when the bullet was originally fired. Patrol officers will be on alert throughout the city looking out for these deadly acts.

If anyone is caught committing this crime they will be arrested. The Police are asking the community to spread the word that this deadly practice is serious and should never be done. Officers will be busy with this issue and other related New Year’s Eve service calls, so if anyone witnesses this deadly conduct they are asked to call Laredo Police immediately and report it.

Additionally as with all holidays where the consumption of alcoholic beverages is customary, we also ask the community to drink responsibly and always have a designated driver. If anyone is hosting a gathering the Laredo Police ask them to please make sure that all their invitees are sober and have not been drinking at all when the celebrating is done and it’s time to drive home. We suggest making accommodations for having a designated driver on hand who has not been drinking at all, and not the least intoxicated person at the party. Only by these extremes can everyone be assured that no one will be killed at the hands of an intoxicated driver.

We also ask the community to please be patient that evening of New Year’s Eve since routine patrol calls for service and busy wait times at LPD dispatch can be expected due to extreme volume of calls that evening. If there is something that can wait for the following morning then we certainly would appreciate it if your request for a service or report could wait until then. 911 should only be used for life or death actual emergencies and not for reporting fireworks or loud music complaints. We will do all we can to provide the service the citizens of the community have come to expect and we appreciate your indulgence during the busy volume of calls forecasted for New Year’s Eve.
