(Laredo, TX ) “I’m so excited to partner with Casa Yoga to bring Laredo’s first ever triathlon and yoga festival to Laredo,” said City of Laredo District VI Council Member Charlie San Miguel.  “Charlie’s Seeds of Change Triathlon, coupled with Casa Yoga’s Seeds of Change Yoga Festival will be awesome events for not only the health conscious, active living minded people in our community, but also, those who would like to make a difference in the environment.  I encourage everyone to participate.”

Both events are scheduled for Saturday, November 9, 2013 at North Central Park, 10202 International Boulevard.  Charlie’s Seeds of Change Triathlon will kick off at 7:30 a.m.; the Seeds of Change Yoga Festival opens at 8:00 a.m. and runs through 1:00p.m., with a 5K Fun Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m., to coincide with the triathlons 5K.

While the Yoga Festival is free, for participants in the 5K Fun Run/Walk, there is a $15 registration fee which will go directly to benefit the Rio Grande International Study Center and to purchase trees for future plantings at North Central Park.  image007Participants in the Triathlon will also see their registration fee – either $40 for individuals or $60 for a team of three – go towards the worthy cause of beautifying the famed and favorite north side park. Participants in both events can register online at www.casayoga.com or in person at Casa Yoga; for the Triathlon, participants can also register at Ciclomania.  Pre-registration concludes on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 7 PM; packet pick-up is the next day on Friday, November 8, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Casa Yoga, 107 Calle del Norte in the Fountain Centre.

“While I know that there are many hard-core, athletic individuals in our community who will love the challenge of the triathlon, I’m hoping that we get a lot of teams participating, so that the fun factor is really kicked up,” said Cm. San Miguel.  “Many people may be intimidated by doing all three events, so the team relay idea was incorporated for this event.  I know I’m looking forward to seeing how many triathletes we have in Laredo.”

Triathletes will bike 5.8 miles over rugged Laredo terrain, starting from the Shiloh Bike Trails and head towards North Central Park.  There, they, or their teammate will run a traditional 5K on the picturesque park trails.  The 5K Fun Runners/Walkers will also be on the same path but will keep to the right to allow for the runners to go through.  The last leg is a quarter mile swim (16 laps) in the new, heated Deacon Leonel and Irma San Miguel Swimming Pool at North Central Park.

Meanwhile, the community is invited to attend the Seeds of Change Yoga Festival, which will feature live music, yoga classes and unique vendors.  Attendees are encouraged to bring a picnic blanket and yoga mat.

“The event is really to support clean living, in all aspects of your life,” said Alli Flores, coordinator of the festival.  “We especially hope to invite people who may not be familiar with all of the health benefits of yoga, aside from its physical, mental and spiritual cleansing, but also, the physical challenge it provides, to show up and learn more.”
