(Laredo, Tx)-Grab your cowboy hats and get ready for United Independent School District’s Annual Parent Festival!  The western themed event takes place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on October 26, 2013 at United High School located at 2811 United Avenue.  The event is free and open to all UISD parents.

“We want to see as many of our parents out there,” said UISD Superintendent Roberto J. Santos.  “The more parents become involved in their child’s education and in their daily activities, the more of a positive impact it will have in their child’s life.”

IMG_3821Coordinated through the Office of Federal and State Compensatory Programs, the Festival will offer a wide range of informative sessions that will help parents with their children at home and in the classroom.  This year’s featured guest speaker will be Ronnie Cabrera who is a dynamic and energetic English-ESL (English as Second Language) teacher, and coach.  There will also be activity camps for children at the festival.  However, registration for these camps will be done the day of the event, on a first-come first serve basis, and spaces are limited.

“Emphasizing the importance of parental involvement is the goal of the Parent Festival,” said Executive Director of Federal and State Compensatory Program Elia M. Juarez.  “Studies have shown that the earlier parents become involved in the education of their child, the more significant the impact on their overall achievement,” she added mentioning that parental involvement yields positive rewards for students such as increased attendance rates, test scores, grades, graduation rates, motivation, self esteem and much more.

“At the end of the day it’s up to parents to be involved in their children’s education,” commented Superintendent Santos.  “Parents can ensure their child receives the full benefits of their education by being simply being involved.”

Several community organizations will also be on hand to give information on their respective programs and services.  Additionally, many door prizes will be given to participants and free breakfast and lunch will be offered.
