Laredo, TX-the Laredo Broncos ended the first half ULB season on a losing note, as they lost the Edinburg Roadrunners by a score of 3-1 at Veterans Field, on Tuesday.
The Roadrunners grabbed the early lead in the first inning. Bryon Smith gave them a 1-0 lead on a rbi single, which scored Robert Matlock from 2nd.
Both starting pitchers were on cruise control during the early part of the game. Broncos’ starter Tano Tijerina settled down after the first inning. He only allowed one batter to reach against him from the second through the fourth inning. In his five innings of work so far, Tijerina struck out five batters. Not to be outdone was the starter for the Roadrunners Pedro Flores. He only allowed one batter to reach in his first four innings, and had also struck out five.
The Broncos finally got to Flores in the fifth. Luany Sanchez was on third base with two away. Jake Wells hit a ball that glanced off the Flores’ glove and went into left field. Sanchez scored to tie the game at one.
The game did not remain tied for very long. In the bottom of the fifth Carlos Hereaud hit a single that scored Vincent Blue. Osiel Flores followed with a single, that chased Tijerina from the ballgame. Jason Herman came into the game and got B.J. Wheeler to hit what looked to be a tailor-made double play ball. However, after the first out was recorded, Ryan Flynn’s throw got by the first baseman Andres Santos. That allowed Flores to score and give the Roadrunners the lead again, by a score of 3-1.
Tijerina lasted five and a third innings giving up three runs, only one which was earned. He gave up three hits, walked four, and struck out five. Tijerina was in line for the loss when he left the ballgame.
Laredo threatened in the seventh inning. Andres Santos reached on an infield single to lead off the inning. Then with one out, pinch hitter Luis Ugueto singled advancing Santos to third. That did it for Edinburg’s starter Pedro Flores, as Austin Bridges came into the game. Bridges stuck out the batters he faced, as the score remained 3-1.
Pedro Flores left the game in line for the victory after throwing six and a third innings. He gave up one run on only five hits. He walked two batters and struck out six.
Carlos Alvarez pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning for the Broncos as they trailed by two runs heading to the bottom of the ninth. The Roadrunners brought in their closer Kelly Casares, as he looked to close out the game.
Laredo went quietly in the inning 1-2-3, as Casares picked up the save in a 3-1 victory for Edinburg.
The Broncos scored 1 runs on 5 hits and had 2 errors while the Roadrunners scored 3 runs on 4 hits and had 0 errors.
The Broncos are now 14-26 on the season while the Roadrunners are 19-21. The Broncos will next be in action Thursday July 23rd, as they open up a four game series against the Amarillo Dillas in Amarillo at 7:05.
