BRONCOS LOSE TO WHITEWINGS IN EXTRA INNINGS

July 15, 2009-Amarillo, TX-the Laredo Broncos received 2 home runs from Argelis Nunez, but it was not enough as they lost the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings in 11 innings by a score of 7-6 at Veterans Field, on Wednesday.
The WhiteWings started the scoring in the 2nd inning. With 2 outs, Jonathan Poterson hit a solo home run, his 8th of the season. That made the score 1-0.
The Broncos got on the scoreboard in the 3rd. Jaime Morales reached on an error by shortstop Angel Reyes. Luis Ugueto followed by being hit by a pitch. David Cardona then laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd. When Morales reached 3rd base, he realized that no was covering home plate. He was able to scamper home and score. With 2 outs, Argelis Nunez came up and hit a 2 run home run, his 5th of the season. That gave Laredo a 3-1 lead.
The WhiteWings inched closer in the 5th. With 2 outs, Augustin Septimo singled. Denys Lantigua followed with a deep fly ball to centerfield that glanced off of OJ Garza glove for an error. Septimo scored on the play, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Broncos.
Rio Grande Valley took the lead in the 6th. With Alberto Cruz on 1st, Wellinson Baez hit a 2 run home run, his 1st of the season. That made the score 4-3 in favor of the WhiteWings.
The lead didn’t last long, as the Broncos grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the 6th. Mario Mendez reached on a single. Then Argelis Nunez hit his 2nd 2 run home run of the game, his 6th of the season. That gave Laredo the 5-4 lead.
The WhiteWings loaded the bases with 1 out, in the top of the 7th inning. Brian Nichols hit a sacrifice fly scoring Casey Allen from 3rd base. That chased Broncos’ starter Will Palmer from the game, as Julio Pinto came in. He would get the final out of the inning, as the game was tied at 5.
Will Palmer pitched well in his 1st professional start for the Broncos, as he picked up a no decision. He went 6 2/3 innings giving up 5 runs, 4 of which were earned, on 6 hits. He walked 4 batters and struck out 2.
Neither team did any damage in the 8th and 9th innings, as we headed to extra innings tied at 5.
The WhiteWings threatened in the top of the 11th against Broncos’ reliever Fernando Rio. With runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs, Angel Reyes hit a 2 rbi double. Scoring were Casey Allen and Denys Lantigua, to give the WhiteWings the 7-5 lead. Julio Santana came into the game in the bottom of the 11th, looking for his 7th save.
The Broncos’ gave Santana a tough inning in the bottom of the 11th. With 1 out, Luany Sanchez walked and then went to 3rd on a single by Robert Moron. Andres Santos followed with a rbi single scoring Sanchez and moving Moron to 2nd. OJ Garza the next batter, would ground into a double play to end the ballgame. The Broncos lost by a score of 7-6.
The Broncos scored 6 runs on 8 hits and had 1 error while the WhiteWings scored 7 runs on 11 hits and had 1 error.
The Broncos are now 11-23 on the season while the WhiteWings are 15-19. The Broncos will next be in action Thursday July 16th, as they play game 3 of a 4 game series against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings in Laredo at 7:30.
