Grand Prairie, TX–First-place Laredo ran into a strong rookie pitching performance today and fell 5-2 to lose both games of a short series at QuikTrip Park. Just over two weeks removed from pitching in his second-straight NAIA College World Series, Grand Prairie left-handed starting pitcher Brandon Bargas had a no-hitter through seven innings against the Lemurs. Trailing 5-0 in the seventh, Laredo scored its first run of the game after catcher Brian Peterson was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on an errant pick-off attempt by Bargas. Center fielder Sawyer Carroll then reached on a fielder’s choice with Peterson safe at third. The next batter, left fielder John Allen, grounded into a double play to score Peterson.
The Lemurs added their second and final run in the eighth inning. Short stop Jimmy Mojica led off with a double and moved to third on a fly out by designated hitter Jake Opitz. Third baseman Garrett Buechele drove in his first run in a Laredo uniform with a sacrifice fly to center to end the day’s scoring. Laredo starter Ryan Sasaki (1-2) took the loss. Sasaki worked six innings and allowed five runs (all earned) on thirteen hits including two home runs. He struck out four and walked two. Grand Prairie starter Brandon Bargas went seven and two-thirds with four strikeouts and one walk in his professional debut. Bargas (1-0) allowed two runs on three base hits with one of the runs unearned. AirHogs reliever Patrick Mincey pitched the ninth for his fourth save of the season. Mincey gave up a hit and struck out one.
At the plate, Sawyer Carroll and Jimmy Mojica each had a double for Laredo. Brandon Pinckney and Ryan Pineda both homered for the AirHogs, while Bryan Myrow and Andres Rodriguez each had three-hit games as well. With the victory, Grand Prairie (12-13) has won four straight games.
The Lemurs (15-11) return to Uni-Trade Stadium for a seven-game home stand starting Thursday night against the El Paso Diablos. First-pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.laredolemurs.com.
