BRONCOS WIN WILD GAME ON WALK OFF

July 2, 2009-Laredo, TX-the Laredo Broncos thought they had won the game in
the bottom of the 9th, but needed 10 inning to beat the San Angelo Colts by
a score of 5-4 at Veterans Field, on Thursday.

The Colts jumped out to the early lead in the top of the 2nd.  The Colts
loaded the bases with no one out against Broncos starter Ryan Harris.
Hunter Jobes hit a sacrifice fly scoring Bryan Frichter to 3rd.  That gave
San Angelo the 1-0 lead.

The Colts extended their lead in the 3rd inning.  Butch Ballez led off with
a single and then with 1 out, went to 2nd on a walk to Jason Diaz.  Ronnie
Gaines then singled in Ballez from 2nd and moved Diaz to 2nd.  Bryan
Frichter followed with a single of his own loading the bases.  Jason
Landreth hit a sacrifice fly scoring Dian and making the score 3-0.

The Broncos got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 4th inning.  With 1
out, Miguel Ortiz reached base on a single.  Mario Mendez then singled into
left-center field.  Ortiz went to 3rd on the play and the throw by the
centerfielder was cut off by the shortstop who threw to 2nd to get Mendez.
Ortiz was able to scamper home on the play However, making the score 3-1 in
favor of the Colts.

The Colts tacked on a run in the top of the 7th inning.  Jason Diaz hit a
rbi double scoring Bradley Goldsmith.  That made the score 4-1 in favor of
San Angelo.

Broncos’ starter Ryan Harris would be done after 7 innings of work.  He gave
up 4 runs only 1 was earned on 8 hits.  He walked 2 and struck out 1.  Julio
Pinto came into the game in relief.

The Broncos made the game interesting in the bottom of the 8th.  OJ Garza
led off with a single and then with 1 out stole 2nd.  Miguel Ortiz then
singled moving Garza to 3rd.  Mario Mendez then delivered a rbi single
scoring Garza and moving Ortiz to 3rd.  Travis Parker came in to pinch run
for Ortiz and would score on a single by Argelis Nunez which advanced Mendez
to 3rd.  That would end the night for Brian Henschel as Colts’ closer Chace
Vacek came into the game.  Luany Sanchez came up to the plate and hit a fly
out to the centerfielder Bradley Goldsmith.  Mendez tagged and headed home
but the throw was right on the money by Goldsmith and Mendez was out at the
plate.  However, the Broncos got closer as they trailed 4-3 heading into the
9th.

Julio Pinto would throw a scoreless 9th, and Chace Vacek came out for San
Angelo to try to nail down the save.

With 1 out in the 9th, Andres Santos doubled to put himself in scoring
position.  Nathan Crawford came in to pinch run.  Then with 2 outs, OJ Garza
hit a groundball to the 1st baseman Nick Mahin who let the ball go through
his legs allowing Crawford to score.  Luis Ugueto followed with a single
moving Garza to 2nd.  Jaime Morales then hit what looked to be a walk off
single.  But, the Colts protested that he was not on the lineup card, and
Morales wasn’t so he was ruled out.  That left the score tied at 4 heading
into extra innings.

Tristan Crawford came into the game and stuck out the side in the top of the
10th.  In the Broncos’ half of the 10th, Mario Mendez was hit by a pitch and
then stole 2nd.  Argelis Nunez moved him over to 3rd with a groundout.
Luany Sanchez was walked intentionally to set up the double play.  But,
Robert Moron hit a deep fly ball to center field for the sacrifice fly
scoring Mendez and giving the Broncos the 5-4 lead.

The Broncos scored 5 runs on 14 hits and had 3 errors while the Colts scored
4 runs on 9 hits and had 1 error.

The Broncos are now 7-14 on the season while the Colts are 14-7.  The
Broncos will next be in action Friday July 3rd, as they open up a 4 game
series against the San Angelo Colts at Veterans Field at 7:30.  You can
