U.S. Soccer Announces Southern California Club as Heat Opponent

Laredo, TX : The United States Soccer Federation announced today all opening and first round Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup matches for the 100th edition of the United States open soccer tournament.

The Laredo Heat, who will be representing the Mid-South Division of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) Premier Development League (PDL), will host the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) Region IV representative, PSA Elite Soccer Club from Irvine, California at the Texas A&M International University Soccer Complex on Tuesday, May 14, 2013.

Kick-off for this First Round U.S. Open Cup match-up will be at 8:00 P.M.

The PSA Elite Soccer Club advanced into the 2013 U.S. Open Cup by virtue of winning the USASA Region IV U.S. Open Cup Tournament with a 4 -1 victory over Doxa Italia from Manhattan Beach, California on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at the Ontario Soccer Park located in Ontario, CA.

PSA Elite advanced to the championship game of the USASA Region IV tournament with an opening round 3 – 0 win over Doxa Italia on Friday, April 19th, a 10 – 1 win over The Internationalist and a 9 – 2 victory over the DV8 Defenders on day two, Saturday, April 20th.

Outside from representing Region IV of the USASA, PSA Elite will also be representing Cal South, the official youth and adult state soccer association for Southern California.

“This club is as good as an amateur side can get and that was evident last year as PSA Elite made their first appearance in the U.S Open Cup and they made some noise early as they defeated the Portland Timbers U-23’s, also a PDL team by a score of 3 – 1”, mentioned Heat General Manager J.J. Vela.

“The beauty of soccer and the U.S. Open Cup are games like this one, where two sides with a history of winning games, from different regions of the United States get an opportunity to play versus each other, the opportunity to hopefully advance to a second round to play teams that are rated higher than themselves and maybe even advance further in the tournament like several teams did during last season’s Open Cup tournament. It’s why we play the games we do”.

Vela concluded, “This Open Cup match will be, for all intent and purpose, our first home game in May before we host our first regular season PDL match on Friday, May 17th versus the Midland / Odessa Sockers FC and it would be very fitting to have a huge fan presence at this game to welcome this team from Orange County, California and it would be awesome for our players to feel the support and energy from the home fans in this critical game for our franchise”.
