United Day School Is Already Walking For A Cure

walkingCourtesy Letty Garcia,

Every year, students at United Day School do their very best to help raise awareness and funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation; this year will be no exception as they get ready for this year’s 2011 Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraiser event.

On FRIDAY, APRIL 26, at 9:00 a.m., the school, located at San Isidro Parkway at McPherson will host their annual school walk to help raise funds to help JDRF.  United Day School Coach Tracy Doan is coordinating the walk and her daughter, Stacy, will speak to kids about the Type I diabetes.

Diabetes afflicts 1.7 million children and adults in Texas alone, many who live in Laredo. Funds raised from sponsorships and attendees of the annual Walk to Cure Diabetes will go towards research to find a CURE for this debilitating disease.

Today, people with type 1 diabetes rely on insulin to manage the disease.  But insulin is not a cure, nor does it prevent the possibility of the disease’s devastating effects, which can include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, amputation and pregnancy complications.  Type I is especially prevalent among Hispanics.
