City of Laredo Health Department Celebrates Breastfeeding Month

Courtesy Xochitl Mora,

Laredo, TX- The City of Laredo Health Department (CLHD) and the Laredo Medical Center (LMC), along with the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Texas Healthy Babies Promotion efforts, encourage the public to celebrate World Breastfeeding Month during the month of August. To commemorate Breastfeeding Month, CLHD Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC) and LMC will be offering a Breastfeeding Baby Shower with the theme: Connecting Communities: Strengthening Support for Breastfeeding Moms for all the women in our community on August 9, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Laredo Medical Center Community Center (First Floor), 1700 E Saunders St.

The event will kick off with a Proclamation by Mayor Pro-Tempore Cynthia Liendo Espinoza and will feature breakfast treats, informational booths, presentations such as “The Hospital Experience” and “Making the Right Amount of Milk” as well as lunch, raffles and door prizes. This event is open to all women in our community and has a special meaning for the CLHD Women, Infants and Children (WIC) participants and the Health Texas Babies/Tejanitos Saludables efforts. We also encourage our community to support breastfeeding moms by connecting, sharing, collaborating, and partnering with breastfeeding supporters. The online community provides quick access to unlimited information using social networks, smartphone apps, and other technologies. The CLHD WIC program is committed to increasing support in the digital community for women, their families, and their friends, by providing portable resources.

“In the age of Google, Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and texts, most people rely on technology for organization and information,” says Dr. Hector Gonzalez, Director of Health. “WIC provides invaluable resources to the digital community via apps and websites, in addition to the 11 clinics in four (4) different counties. Breastfeeding moms rely on these resources at their fingertips, which may determine whether or not a mother begins and continues breastfeeding. It is up to our community to connect with each other so we can support these moms and their efforts to provide the optimal source of nutrition and comfort for their babies.”
