Laredo Police Department’s Auto Theft Division Recognized
The Automobile Burglary and Theft Prevention Authority Board of Directors held its annual Auto Theft conference in Houston, Texas last week and the Laredo Police Department’s Auto Theft Task Force was recognized for their Auto Theft prevention campaigns and Auto Theft Prevention Operations. The Laredo Police Department was one of three Police Departments bestowed with the honor. Houston and Del Rio Police Departments were also recognized. These three departments were chosen out of over 30 police departments in the state. The Texas Auto Burglary and Theft Prevention Authority also awarded the Laredo Auto Theft Task Force with a grant for $433,514.00 for FY-2010. There is a cash match for the city for $269,010.00 for a grand total amount of $702,524. This grant money will go towards proactive and preventive auto theft operations.

The Automobile Burglary and Theft Prevention Authority (ABTPA) supports statewide law enforcement through auto theft reduction initiatives, education and public awareness.
The ABTPA has awarded 485 theft prevention grants to cities, counties and regions around the state since 1991. In that time, auto theft in Texas has decreased by 61 percent (per 100,000 registered vehicles).
