A win for the Rattlers against TAMIU Dustdevils determines Heartland Conference Tournament host
(Laredo, TX ) “Calling all St. Mary’s University alumni in the Laredo area: Bring the family and come watch our beloved Rattlers play spoilers against the Texas A&M International University Dustdevils’; then celebrate afterwards with the team and fellow Laredo alumni!” said Xochitl Mora Garcia, BA, ’95, president of the St. Mary’s University Alumni Association-Laredo chapter.
On Saturday, February 25, 2012, the St. Mary’s University Rattlers men’s and women’s basketball teams will travel down to Laredo to take on the Dustdevils in games that have play-off tournament implications. The women’s teams take to the court at noon at the TAMIU Kinesiology Convocation Building; the men’s teams will square off at 2 PM.
According to Chad Peters, Sports Information Coordinator for the Rattlers, should standings remain the same until next week’s game, a victory by the Rattlers over the Dustdevils – by a certain margin of points – for the men’s basketball team means that St. Mary’s University could end up hosting the Heartland Conference play-off tournament, instead of TAMIU. As of press time, St. Mary’s is one game behind the first place Dustdevils. The Rattlers women’s basketball team has already clinched a play-off berth and is looking to improve its standing in the tournament.
The St. Mary’s University Alumni Association Laredo Chapter has been busy planning a social mixer for the upcoming St. Mary’s vs. Texas A&M International University basketball game, which, according to Mora, is a rivalry waiting to explode.
“St. Mary’s has always had a dominant basketball program; in fact, the school has a National Championship, and several appearances in the National Tournament, to prove it,” said Mora. “But, I’ll admit, the Rattlers were caught off guard by the Dustdevils last year. Not this year. We hope to get a sea of blue and gold at the game to cheer on the Rattlers to victory. LET’S GO RATTLERS!”
Win or – unthinkable, of course – loose, the St. Mary’s Alumni Association is hosting a mixer at Palenque Grill immediately after the game for alumni and their family; joining them at the celebration will be both the men’s and women’s basketball teams and coaches. Alumni and their family planning to attend the game and/or mixer should please R.S.V.P. by contacting the Alumni Relations Office at 1-800-699-9932 or via e-mail at alumni@stmarytx.edu. by February 22, 2012.
