The Laredo Broncos offense went silent as they
lost for the 3rd straight night to the Costal Bend Thunder by a score of 7-1
at Fairgrounds Field.
The Thunder started off the scoring in their half of the 1st inning. They
had Dustin Smith on 3rd and Michael Lewis on 2nd with 2 away. Amadeo
Zazueta came up and delivered a 2 run double making the score 2-0.
Costal Bend would add on to their lead in the 2nd inning. With 2 outs
Dustin Smith was hit by a pitch. Then back to back singles by Michael Lewis
and Leivi Ventura loaded the bases. Manny Mejia stepped up to the plate and
delivered a grand slam home run, his 2nd home run of the season, giving the
Thunder the 6-0 lead.
The Broncos would get on the board in the top of the 3rd. Kylee Hash led
off with a walk and went to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt. Luis Ugueto then
singled and was followed by a walk to OJ Garza to load the bases with only 1
out. Mario Mendez then hit a ball that landed in shallow right field. With
only 1 out, the runners had to hold, and Garza was forced out at 2nd. Hash
would score on the play, making the score 6-1.
The Broncos would threaten in the 5th inning. They had the bases loaded
with 2 outs and Andres Santos at the plate, but Santos flied out to end the
inning keeping the score at 6 to 1. Thunder starter Francisco Castillo
would be taken out after the 5th inning in line for the victory.
The Broncos has a chance to make the game interesting in the top of the 7th.
Ryan Flynn led off with a walk. Luis Ugueto then tried to bunt for a hit
and was called out by base umpire Woodie Bell, even though the Thunder’s
first baseman clearly came off the bag. OJ Garza would then walk, so
instead of bases loaded and no one out, the Broncos had 1st and 2nd with 1
out. However, Mario Mendez would strike out and Argelis Nunez ground out to
end the inning. After the inning was over Ugueto came out and started
arguing with Bell and was ejected from the game.
Ryan Harris the starter for the Broncos would end up settling down after the
rough start. He ended up going 7 innings giving up 6 runs, 4 of which were
earned on 7 hits. He walked no one and struck out 3. Carlos Alvarez came
into the game and gave up a run on a sacrifice fly making the score 7-1.
The Broncos would go quietly in their half of the 9th as they lost to the
Thunder by a score of 7-1.
The Broncos scored 1 run on 5 hits and had 4 errors while the Thunder scored
7 runs on 9 hits and had 1 error.
The Broncos are now 2-9 on the season while the Thunder are 6-5. The
