Yesterday evening, Mayor Pro Tempore Cindy Liendo Espinoza and the Laredo City Council welcomed some very special kids in our community, to honor them for their accomplishments representing the city of Laredo. Additionally, some adults who are working to promote and improve our city also presented at council.
Amparo Guiterrez Elementary students Alyssa Rodriguez, 5th grader and Nicolas Limon, 3rd grader, were recognized for placing 1st Place in the Dribble, Dish & Swish Regional Competition held January 7, 2012 in Houston, Texas. Alyssa also placed 3rd overall in the state in this competition. Nicolas and Alyssa were joined by their parents for the recognition.
Later, Coach Avila and his Lady Hot Shots basketball team presented medals to Dist. IV Council Member Juan Narvaez for his efforts to assist the girls with their basketball team, including a recent tournament held over the Christmas holidays to collect toys for needy kids in the community.
Rainy Castaneda, a senior at United South High School, was recognized for placing 10th out of 120 athletes at Cross Country Regional competition in San Antonio, qualifying her for State competition for the third year in a row. She was joined by her parents and her coach, Coach Salazar.
Laredo Main Streets Executive Director Sandra Rocha Taylor and Board Members Jack Cruthirds, Joseph Mendiola, Robert Portillo, and Cynthia Snyder invited the community for the 14th Annual UETA Jamboozie Festival, which will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2012, in Laredo’s Historic Downtown. MPT Liendo Espinoza also read a proclamation for this event.
Rio Grande International Study Center Executive Director Tricia Cortez, along with RGISC board members Gayle Hausemann, Victor Oliveros and Dr. Alfonso Martinez invited the public to attend the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo: River of Life, River in Peril conference sponsored by the Rio Grande International Study Center, also on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the UT Health Science Center – Laredo campus, 1937 Bustamante St. Registration/breakfast will start at 8 AM. Keynote address by World Wildlife Fund.
