Ribbon Cuttings
Make plans to join us at the following ribbon cutting celebrations for the following completed Parks Project events:
* Tuesday, June 23, 2009, Andres “Andy” Ramos Park Soft Surface Track at 11:00am (4300 Springfield).
- Tuesday, June 30, 2009, Santa Maria Elementary School Soft Surface Track at 10:00am (3817 Santa Maria).
Summer Camp
Summer Camp is currently being held at all 5 recreation centers plus the newly opened sites (June 15th) of Trautman Middle, Finley and Arndt Elementary. You can still register at Inner City Tech-Recreation Center Monday thru Friday starting at 8am and at all other recreation centers after 3pm.
Update on space availability; Hillside Recreation Center has no space available, Cigarroa and Farias Recreation Center have space only in the 12 to 15 age group; East Hachar and Tarver Centers have space in all age groups. As for the school sites, transfers are still being conducted from recreation centers to school sites for those that have requested the transfer. We continue to call parents that placed their children on the waiting list after Hillside Rec. capped. We currently have over 1200 children registered for our entire summer camp program.
Recreation Center Events
Epoca Cine De Oro (Seniors)
This month’s presentation is on June 25th at the Civic Center Ballroom from 9:30 am to 2:00pm with lunch, music and dancing immediately following. The featured movie is “Okey, Mister Pancho” starring La India Maria.
Adult Basketball League
The playoffs begin this coming week for division A B divisions.
Division A – Completed its games last week.
Division B – Games at Farias Rec. Center on Tuesday, June 23rd at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm.
Playoffs start June 25th (Thursday) and June 26th (Friday) from 7:00pm to 9:00pm with the Championship game being played Saturday, June 27th – All games will be played at Farias Recreation Center.
High School Basketball League
Girls – Tuesdays, June 23rd @ Hillside Rec. Center – time 7, 8 and 9pm.
Thursday, June 25th @ Cigarroa Rec. Center – time 7, 8 and 9pm.
Boys – Monday and Wednesday @ Tarver and Farias Recreation Center from 7pm – 8pm
Computer Classes (Spanish)

Aquatics Events
Adaptive Aquatics
We continue to sponsor along with the American Red Cross a course for people of special needs, the course helps enhance their physical movement as well as promote a better quality of life. The activities are modified to meet the special needs of each individual. The sessions will be held June 20, 27, July 18 and August 1st from 9:00am to 11:00am. There is no fee and registration continues until all slots are filled. For more information call our Aquatics Division at 794-1765.
Learn to Swim
Registration for Summer Sessions III & IV of our Learn to Swim classes will be June 22nd to June 26th at the Civic Center Ballroom from 9am to 6pm.
Session III will start June 30th thru July 10th and Session IV will start July 14th thru July 24th.
Swim Team Registrations
We are currently having registrations for our Swim Teams; you can register at all pool sites, registration is free! Every pool will register a team (limit 25 participants) from ages 6 yrs old to 17 yrs of age. Our first swim meet will be July 11th.
Adult Water Aerobics and Lap Swimming
This week (June 15-19) we had registration for the Adult Water Aerobics and Lap Swimming at LBV Inner-City Pool. Classes are almost filled up, the demand and feedback for these has been very impressive. The session will be from June 23 to July 17. The next session will start on July 21 thru Aug. 14; registration for that session will be on July 14 thru July17.
Library Events
La Hora del Cuento con KLDO
Join us as personalities from KLDO come by the Library and sponsor a fun hour of reading popular children’s books in Spanish. This program has become very popular so seating is limited to those with admission tickets. The tickets can be picked up at any time at the library Children’s Department during library hours.
Movie Madness Continues at the Library
We continue with our monthly line up of free movies and snacks!! This coming week, Monday, June 22nd we will be showing “Marley and Me” from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm.
Passports
Reminder!! We continue to process applications for passports, Monday thru Friday from 9:00am to 11:30am. Applications are limited to the first 50 families per day.
Teen Advisory Board
The City of Laredo Public Library Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is a great opportunity for teens to volunteer their time and have a voice in the planning and implementing of Library teen programming and services. Membership in TAB can be used toward their student community service requirement! For information for the next meeting contact Nikki Acosta at 795-2400.
