BRONCOS GET BACK ON WINNING TRACK WITH WIN OVER COLTS

June 17, 2009-Laredo, TX- The Laredo Broncos bats came alive as they
defeated the San Angelo Colts by a score of 8-4 at Veterans Field .
The Broncos started the scoring off in their half of the 1st inning. Luis
Ugueto led off the game with a walk and went to 3rd on a single by OJ Garza.
Mario Mendez followed with a sacrifice fly which scored Ugueto. Argelis
Nunez then singled moving Garza to 2nd. David Cardona then reached on
fielder’s choice with Garza going to 3rd and Nunez out at 2nd. While Rafael
Ozuna was batting, Cardona went to steal 2nd, when San Angelo’s catcher
tried to throw out Cardona and on the throw Garza stole home with Cardona
being safe at 2nd. That made the score 2-0 Broncos.
It would stay that way till the 3rd inning when the Colts got some help by
the Broncos defense. With the bases loaded and 2 outs, Hank Lanto hit a
groundball to Broncos shortstop Ryan Flynn whose throw was high which
allowed Lanto to be safe at 1st. The error led to the first run being
scored. Butch Ballez then followed with a infield single scoring another
and keeping the bases loaded. Then Broncos starter Gregorio Martinez threw
a wild pitch allowing another run to score and giving San Angelo the 3-2
lead. All 3 runs were unearned.
Laredo would strike back in their half of the 3rd. with one out Mario
Mendez singled. Argelis Nunez then reached on a fielder’s choice with
Mendez out at 2nd. The throw by the Colts to get Nunez landed in the dugout
which allowed Nunez to advance to 2nd on the error. Then David Cardona
walked. With Rafael Ozuna batting, a balk was called on Colts starter
Andrew Coffey. Ozuna then blasted a 2 run double scoring both Nunez and
Cardona. Miguel Ortiz then followed with a single moving Ozuna to 3rd.
Ortiz would then steal 2nd to move in scoring position, and he and Ozuna
would score on a double by Jake Wells. The 4 unearned runs gave the Broncos
a 6-3 lead.
The Colts would get a run back in the top of the 4th on a rbi groundout by
Jason Landreth. The Broncos would respond in their half of the 4th with a
run of their own. Luis Ugueto walked and then went to 2nd on a wild pitch.
After a groundout moved him to 3rd, Mario Mendez hit a sacrifice fly making
the scored 7-4 in favor of the Broncos.
The Broncos would then make it 8-4 as they added a run in the bottom of the
6th off of reliever Joe Key. Luis Ugueto walked. Then with 2 outs Mario
Mendez singled into left field. Ugueto went to 3rd and the throw got away
from the 3rd baseman allowing him to score. Mendez was out trying to make
it to 3rd.
Broncos’ starter Gregorio Martinez would leave the game in line for the win
after 6 innings of work. He gave up 4 runs only 1 was earned on 9 hits. He
walked 3 batters and struck out 6. Edgar Soto came into the game and gave
up a single to Brian Nichols and a walk to Nick Mahin. Julio Pinto would
then come into the game to try to get out of the jam. Pinto would do just
that as he got a strike out, a fly out and a ground out to end the threat
and keep Laredo up by 4.
Pinto would pitch a scoreless 8th inning and came into the game in the 9th
and closed the game out for the Broncos as they beat the Colts by a score of
8-4.
The Broncos scored 8 runs on 10 hits and had 2 errors while the Colts scored
4 runs on 10 hits and had 1 error.
The Broncos are now 2-5 on the season while the Colts are 4-3. The Broncos
will next be in action tomorrow Thursday June 18th as they play the finale
of a 4 game series against the Colts at 7:30. You can listen to that game
