Yellow to Green Will be Winning Combination for Laredo Scouts

AT&T2Local Brownie Troop #9173 join everyone’s favorite environmentally friendly trashcan mascot, Willie Bote, and the AT&T Real Yellow Pages mascot to help kick off the annual AT&T Phone Book Recycling Contest.  This year’s contest will pit Laredo Boy and Girl Scouts in a competition to collect the most outdated AT&T phone books.  For every 10 books, a scout earns a merit badge, as well as helps to save Laredo’s environment.

Scouts to learn importance, impact of recycling
For the next few weeks, scout troops from throughout Laredo will be busily collecting outdated AT&T phone books, those famous Yellow Pages, in hopes of collecting some greenbacks.   The new phonebooks will start arriving at your doorstep in the next few days, but instead of tossing that old directory in the trash, help your community and the landfill by recycling the old book.
The Annual AT&T Yellow Pages contest sponsored by AT&T will pit Girl, Boy and Cub Scout troops in a contest to see who can collect as many books as possible.  Each Scout must collect 10 books each in order to receive a recycling patch from their respective troop.  The winning troop from each division will win a pizza party at a picnic award ceremony.  They will also have a tour of the recycling facility at the Landfill in order to earn their merit badges.
“What a great way for Laredo Scouts to get involved and to learn why recycling is so important,” said Willie Bote, the City of Laredo’s Solid Waste Department’s environmentally-friendly trashcan mascot.  “This contest teaches them to be good stewards of the earth, to help keep Laredo beautiful, and how easy it is to make an impact in protecting our environment,” he added.

In the past few years, approximately 8,000 books have been collected each year. While quite an impressive number, over 75,000 new phone books are distributed every summer, which means that there are literally, tons of old phonebooks not being recycled, and possibly, being thrown into the landfill.

According to the Recycling Alliance of Texas, recycling one ton of material saves 17 trees; 7,000 gallons of water; 60 pounds of air pollution; 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space; and 4,100 kilowatts of electricity.

The recycling campaign saves natural resources and landfill space.  Old phone books can be recycled into a wide variety of products, such as bathroom tissue, paper towels, cereal boxes and new directories.

To donate your outdate phone book, drop them off at the following AT&T locations:  5704 N. San Bernardo Avenue; 3806 South Highway 83; and 5711 McPherson, Suite 204; or at the City of Laredo Recycling Drop-Off Center at 2200 McPherson, or of course, in your blue recycling bag.
