BRONCOS WILDNESS COSTS THEM IN 2009 SEASON OPENER

broncos
June 11, 2009-Edinburg, TX- The Laredo Broncos pitching staff had trouble
finding the strike zone as they lost the first game of the 2009 season to
the Edinburg Roadrunners by a score of 10-6.

The Broncos jumped out to an early lead in the 1st inning.  Steven Wright
led off the 2009 season with a double.  After a groundout Andres “El Monkey”
Santos drew a walk.  Argelis Nunez then stepped up and delivered a rbi
single scoring Wright from 2nd and giving Laredo the 1-0 lead.

That would stay the score till the 4th inning when the Broncos tacked on
some more runs.  Mario Mendez led off the inning with a solo home run, his
1st of season.  David Cardona would then follow with a single and would move
to 3rd on a single by Kylee Hash.  Ryan Flynn came through with his 1st
professional hit which was a rbi single scoring Cardona from 3rd and
advancing Hash to 2nd.  Steven Wright then hit into what looked like a easy
double play, but the throw from the Roadrunners 2nd baseman Carlos Heraud
sailed into Edinburg’s dugout allowing Hash to score from 2nd and Wright to
advance to 2nd.  That gave the Broncos a 4-0 lead.

Broncos starter Ryan Harris sailed thru his first 3 innings, but ran into
trouble in the bottom of the 4th.  Amado German singled to lead off the
inning and was followed by a walk to Angel Reyes.  Ozzie Flores then hit a
rbi single scoring German from 2nd.  Robert Matlock then walked to load the
bases.  Nick Aranda would be safe on a fielder’s choice which allowed Reyes
to score and Flores to advance to 3rd.  Then with Vincent Blue batting the
Roadrunners attempted a double steal, Broncos shortstop Ryan Flynn cut off
the throw heading to 2nd and fired it home to nail Flores at the plate.
Blue then flew out to end the inning with Laredo leading 4-2.

The Broncos would get one of those runs back in the 5th inning.  With 1 out
Argelis Nunez would walk and move to 2nd on a single by Mario Mendez.  Then
after a passed ball move the runners to 2nd and 3rd, Miguel Ortiz hit a rbi
ground out scoring Nunez.  That gave Laredo a 5-2 lead.

That would knock out Roadrunners starter Pedro Flores who only went 4 2/3.
He gave up 5 runs 4 of which were earned on 9 hits.  He walked 2 batters and
struck out 4.  Austin Bridges would then come into the game.

Edinburg would get another run in their half of the 5th.  Carlos Hereaud
walked to lead off the inning and then scored on a rbi double by Eric
Gonzalez, making the score 5-3.

Harris would come out and start the 6th for the Broncos, but after he hit
Ozzie Flores and walked Robert Matlock to start the inning, he would be
taken out and Nathan Crawford would come into the game.  Crawford would then
hit Nick Aranda to load the bases.  Vincent Blue hit a sacrifice fly scoring
Flores and allowing Matlock to move to 3rd and Aranda to 2nd.  Carlos
Hereaud then hit a 2 run single.  He would later steal 2nd and then score on
a single by Amado German.  Dave Wasylak would then come in and get the 3rd
out, but the Roadrunners led by a score of 7-5.

Harris ended up getting a no decision going 5 plus giving up 5 runs all
earned on 4 hits.  He walked 7 batters and struck out 4.  Crawford who only
went 2/3 gave up 3 runs on 2 hits.  He walked 0 and struck out 2 and was in
line for the loss.

Laredo would threaten in the 7th inning.  Argelis Nunez walked to start off
the inning.  He would advance to 3rd on a double by Mario Mendez.  Bryan
Heaston would then come into the game and relieve Bridges.  Heaston would
come in and retire Miguel Ortiz, David Cardona, and Kylee Hash to get out of
the jam and keep the score 7-5 in favor of Edinburg.

The Roadrunners would extend their lead in their half of the 7th off of
Wasylak.  Ozzie Flores led off with a single and then 2 straight walks to
Robert Matlock and Nick Aranda.  Vincent Blue then delivered a 2 run single
scoring both Flores and Matlock and moving Aranda to 3rd.  Then Carlos
Hereaud fouled out to Andres Santos, but when Santos tried to double off
Blue at 1st, Blue’s slide knocked over Wasylak covering first and allowed
Aranda to score.  That would do it for Wasylak as David Triplet would come
into the game and get the last 2 outs as the Broncos now trailed 10-5.

Laredo would score a run in the 9th inning.  Andres Santos led off with a
double and advanced to 3rd on a ground out.  Mario Mendez then knocked in
Santos with a sacrifice fly.  That was it for the Broncos as they dropped
the season opener by a score of 10-6.  The Broncos pitching staff allowed 10
walks and 3 hit batters, which led to the big innings for the Roadrunners.

Broncos scored 6 runs on 12 hits and 1 error while the Roadrunners scored 10
runs on 9 hits and 1 error.
