COUNTY JUDGE DECLARES COUNTY DISASTER AND BANS THE SALE AND USE OF ALL FIREWORKS

(Laredo, Tx)- Sustained hot and dry weather conditions has prompted Webb County Judge Danny Valdez to issue a county disaster declaration, banning the sale and use of all fireworks in the unincorporated areas of Webb County, Texas by anyone other than a licensed pyrotechnics expert at permitted events.  The last time the County imposed a ban was back in 2009.

“My decision to ban the fireworks was made to insure that all Webb County residents and visitors remain as safe as possible during these dry conditions,” said Judge Valdez.  “The county is under imminent threat of severe damage, injury or loss of life or property resulting from the threat of wildfires”. “We consulted with the Texas Forest Service, Governor’s Division of Emergency Management and the Webb County and City of Laredo Fire Departments and felt that the safety of the residents was our top priority.”

Valdez said he wants to take every precaution to avoid a fire disaster like the one that took place at El Cenizo on April 4th this year that caused extensive damage to the area.

Sellers and buyers risk hefty fines for the sale and use of any fireworks.  Residents are strongly encouraged to enjoy the July 4th holiday, but to do it in a way that protects themselves, their families and their neighbors.   The disaster declaration takes effect at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15th. Under state law, the ban remains in effect thereafter for 60 hours from the date and time of the order unless extended by the Governor of Texas.  The County will send a request to Governor Rick Perry to authorize an extension to the fireworks ban through July 5, 2011.
