Man gets 364 days for Abandoning his Children

Courtesy Monica Garcia,

The Office of District Attorney Isidro R. Alaniz reports that Gabriel Santa Maria appeared in the 406th District Court  for sentencing in his criminal trial.  He and his wife, Luz Elena Santa Maria, were both arrested and charged with four counts of Abandoning a Child on June 12, 2009.

On that date, Federal agents were serving a warrant at 5460 Springfield Avenue at approximately 8am.  Upon questioning the persons found at the location, the couple admitted to authorities that they had left their four children home alone and had not been home ‘since 4am.  The agents requested permission to do a site visit and verify the information.  At the Santa Maria home, the agents found four children home and without adult supervision.  All four children were under fourteen years of age.

Gabriel and Luz Elena Santa Maria were taken into custody and charged with four counts of Abandoning a Child.  On May 9, 2011, Gabriel Santa Maria waived indictment on his case and pled guilty to Attempted Abandonment of a Child.  He returned to court today and, as part of his plea agreement, he was sentenced to serve 364 days in jail.
