Click It or Ticket

LAREDO, Tx – The Laredo Police Department in collaboration with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will ticket drivers and passengers who are not wearing their safety belts during the 10th Annual Click It or Ticket (CIOT) safety belt enforcement campaign, May 23 through June 5. Other state and local law enforcement will also be working overtime to ensure motorists and passengers are obeying Texas ’ safety belt laws.

Please join the Laredo Police Department at a TxDOT-sponsored press conference on May 17, 2011 at 10 a.m. at the Laredo Police Department front entrance (outside) at 4712 Maher Ave. as TxDOT announces the awarding of $9,115.31 in grant funds to the Laredo Police Department for CIOT seat belt law enforcement. TxDOT representatives, City of Laredo and Laredo Police Department officials, area law enforcement agencies and state law enforcement transportation safety advocates are expected to be in attendance.

This year, we want to celebrate the 2,843 lives saved in Texas since 2001 due to the Click It or Ticket Campaign efforts. The use of seat belts also has saved an estimated $10 billion in wages and productivity losses, medical expenses, vehicle damage, employer costs, taxes, insurance premiums, travel delays and loss of quality of life.

Click It or Ticket is part of a nationwide crackdown aimed at enforcing safety belt and child safety seat laws for adults and children during the Memorial Day (May 30) holiday period. Fines for failing to fasten your seat belt can add up to $250, plus court costs. It’s not just drivers that must buckle up—state law also requires passengers in the front and back seat to buckle up.
