No Cell Phone Use around Schools Zones
Mayor Raul Salinas says “let it ring!”
The City of Laredo Mayor, Raul Salinas, personally oversaw the installation of new “cell phone use prohibited” signs posted near local area school zones today. This new ordinance was spear headed by the Mayor and supported by the City Council in order to ensure the safety of the city’s youngest citizens in and around schools. The opportunity to avert a terrible tragedy merely by being less distracted was the reason behind the new ordinance which reads;
2009-O-039 Amending Chapter 19 Entitled “Motor Vehicle and Traffic” of the Code of Ordinances by adding a new Section 19-223 to be entitled “use of hand-held mobile telephones in school zones”; directing the City Manager to erect signs in affected areas; providing for a repealing clause; providing for a severability clause; providing for a penalty of fine not to exceed two hundred dollars ($200.00) for each offense; and providing an effective date.
This new ordinance was passed on March 16, 2009. The posting of signs will deliver the new directive to the motoring public to put down the cell phones and pay attention to the road which is vital to school safety. Mayor Salinas states “The reason I wanted to see this law on the books is to further enhance the safety of our school zones for the children of Laredo.”
