LAREDO, Texas – The City of Laredo held a press conference to provide an update on the ongoing emergency response following the October 7 DoubleTree Hotel fire, outlining the structural safety concerns, stabilization efforts, and continuing investigation into the cause of the incident.

Although the fire has been extinguished, the City remains in the emergency response phase, with recovery efforts also underway. The building continues to pose a potential structural hazard, requiring safety restrictions and coordination among emergency personnel, structural engineers, and the property owner.

Structural Safety and Stabilization Efforts

Emergency Management Director and Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño emphasized that the City’s priority remains protecting residents, businesses, and emergency responders as officials address the risk posed by the damaged structure.

Preliminary assessments conducted by the property owner’s structural engineering team have identified significant damage to columns on the building’s fifth floor, raising concerns about their load-bearing capacity and the possibility of structural collapse.

The property owner and specialized contractors are developing a temporary shoring plan designed to reinforce the building and transfer structural loads away from damaged areas. Contractors are expected to begin mobilizing equipment and implementing stabilization measures in the coming days.

The stabilization and structural assessment process is currently estimated to take approximately five to six weeks, although this timeline remains subject to engineering evaluations, site conditions, and the contractor’s ability to perform the work safely.

City officials emphasized that temporary stabilization does not represent a final determination regarding the building’s long-term future. Additional engineering assessments will help determine whether the structure can be safely maintained or whether further action, potentially including demolition, may be necessary.

Public Safety Restrictions Remain in Place

Emergency Management Coordinator and Laredo Fire Chief Guillermo Heard confirmed that the established collapse zone will remain in effect until qualified structural engineers determine that conditions allow for safe access.

The restrictions continue to affect nearby residents, businesses, and surrounding roadways. While the City recognizes the inconvenience and economic impact, officials stressed that public safety must take precedence over reopening affected areas.

The City will continue evaluating the perimeter and provide updates as engineering findings become available.

Fire Investigation and Technology

The Laredo Fire Marshal’s Office, in coordination with the Laredo Police Department, continues investigating the cause of the fire.

Police Chief Miguel A. Rodriguez Jr. explained that structural instability has limited investigators’ ability to safely access areas of interest within the building. To support the investigation, the Police Department is deploying additional resources and specialized technology, including drones and a robotic device capable of assisting with interior assessments and mapping.

These tools will help investigators document conditions and identify potential evidence while minimizing risks to personnel.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and officials emphasized that the investigation remains active.

Continued Coordination and Community Updates

Assistant City Manager Ramon Chavez confirmed that City staff will continue working closely with the property owner, engineering specialists, and contractors throughout the stabilization process.

Once contractors mobilize, City officials anticipate daily coordination meetings to monitor progress, review safety conditions, and address any concerns that may arise.

The City also recognized the work of firefighters, police officers, emergency management personnel, and supporting departments involved in the response.

The City of Laredo remains committed to keeping the community informed as stabilization efforts and the investigation progress. Residents and businesses are encouraged to respect established safety perimeters and follow official City communication channels for further updates.

Public safety will continue to guide all decisions regarding structural stabilization, investigative access, and the eventual reopening of affected areas.
