Courtesy Lauren Cavazos,

(Laredo, Texas)-Recently, six elite art students from Alexander High School (AHS) competed in the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) State Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) Art Competition in San Marcos, Texas.

Only eight artworks from AHS qualified for the State Art Competition out of the 35,000+ artworks that were entered around the state. Out of 35,000 artworks, only about 1500 qualify to advance to State. Those 1500 artworks are rated and the very best are awarded either a Rating 4: State Medal or Rating 5: Gold Seal. A Rating 5 is the most prestigious prize awarded to high school artworks in Texas.

United ISD proud to announce that AHS students came home with 2 Gold Seal Awards and 5 State Medals! Individual results include:  Marcus Venegas, Gold Seal Award and State Medal; Jasmine Elias, Gold Seal Award; Krissy Valdez, State Medal; Melanie Dominguez, State Medal; Kristi Brooks, two State Medals; and Emily Esqueda, State Medal.

This is the first time in Alexander’s history that students have earned the Gold Seal Award and this is a record number of State Medals in AHS history. Alexander High School is the ONLY school in Laredo to have ever earned a Gold Seal.  Congratulations, Alexander High School Art students, on a job well done.  The AHS Art students are under the instruction of Erika L. Buentello, Advanced/AP Art Instructor.
