(Laredo, Texas)-On February 1, 2019, USHS students in Mrs. Claudia Saenz’ Logistics and Distribution Management class embarked on a field trip to the port at Corpus Christi. The trip gave students an opportunity to study the logistics and transportation of various goods from the seaport city, and allowed them to make comparisons to the land-based operations they witnessed at the World Trade Bridge in 2018.
The port at Corpus Christi is the fourth largest port in the United States and the leading U.S. crude oil export port. It is located on the Western Gulf of Mexico and serves as a major economic engine of Texas and the nation. Given the strategic role the port plays in facilitating the continued expansion of U.S. energy exports, there has been major construction to deepen and widen the port’s shipping channel in order to accommodate larger vessels and increase efficiency. Upon completion in 2021, the port will greatly support delivery of energy products to global markets.
According to student Alejandra Hernandez ,the largest and busiest inland port in the United States is located Laredo, Texas. “To our surprise, we found out that more than 6,000 vessels and 80 million tons of cargo sail through Corpus Christi’s port every year-making it the nation’s fourth-largest based on tonnage. The most important lesson we learned was knowledge about future opportunities for employment within the logistics and distribution management industry in Texas and beyond”, said Hernandez.
