(Laredo, Texas)-Selfless, fun, dedicated, and passionate are just a few words used to describe Sylvia Vargas who was named as a semi-finalist of the Barnes and Noble My Favorite Teacher Contest. Lorna Adams, Regional Representative for Barnes and Noble, awarded Ms. Vargas with a plaque and notice that she has qualified to compete for the grand prize of $10,000.
Vargas, an English Teacher at JBA, was nominated by her student Liza Ahumada, who poignantly described Ms. Vargas’s approach to teaching as “the most inspiring, uplifting, beacon of light who ignites a love for learning.”
Alexander High School submitted over 200 entries for this contest in which five teachers, including Vargas were recognized. “We were amazed by the quantity and well written entries that came from this campus alone,” stated Lorna Adams of Barnes and Noble. “The caliber of writing from these entries is a true testament to the seemingly wonderful work and dedication of the many teachers nominated for this award,” she added.
A total of five teachers were invited to the event where each of their nominators read their entries to them. Amidst many smiles there were many tears of joy and happiness throughout the ceremony.  “We have many hardworking and selfless teachers who give so much of themselves on a daily basis,” said Elvira Gaona, Magnet Dean at John B. Alexander High School. “This recognition is a great way to celebrate and thank them for their amazing work,” she added.
The overall sentiment at the event was that each of these amazing teachers not only stresses the value of learning on a daily basis, but that they exude a love for inspiring our future through fun, meaningful and well thought out instruction. A nationwide winner will be announced later this month.
