LAREDO, TEXAS – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers marked the new year with a significant seizure of narcotics in the cargo environment; more than two and a half tons of marijuana seized at World Trade Bridge.
“Amid heavy traffic as travelers begin to return from the holiday break, our frontline officers at World Trade Bridge continued to maintain their vigilance and their perseverance led to the seizure of more than 5,000 pounds of marijuana,” said Acting Port Director Albert Flores, Laredo Port of Entry. “This large seizure illustrates the seriousness of the drug threat our officers face every day and their commitment to border security.”
The seizure occurred on Tuesday, Jan. 2, when a CBP officer referred a 2009 Freightliner tractor hauling a 1999 Stoughton trailer with a shipment of drywall for a secondary examination. A non-intrusive imaging system, canine, and physical inspection by CBP officers resulted in the discovery of 459 bundles containing 5,164 pounds of alleged marijuana. The marijuana has an estimated street value of $1,032,635.
CBP officers seized the narcotics. The case was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI) special agents for further investigation.
