(Laredo, Texas)-The Elias R. Herrera Middle School, will be the future home of the mighty Hawks. The school was named posthumously in his honor. United ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved the renaming of the existing Trautmann Middle School to the Elias R. Herrera Middle School at the general meeting this month.

“The positive impact Mr. Herrera had on United ISD is immeasurable,” said Javier Montemayor, School Board Vice President. “Many of our students and educators still benefit from the substantial contribution he made to United ISD.”

Herrera, a long time educator for United ISD, was a pivotal component during the district’s early years. He was instrumental with the formation of many student programs within the district, that are still in place today. United Field of Dreams, United Longhorn Yearbook, the Bilingual Program, and the organization of Central Office are just a few examples of his contributions to the district.

“Many of United’s beginnings start with Mr. Herrera,” said Roberto J. Santos, Superintendent of Schools for United ISD. “The Board of Trustees made an excellent decision in naming this school after Mr. Elias R. Herrera.

Herrera served in various capacities during his tenure with United ISD before his retirement in 1997. After serving 40 years as an educator, administrator, director, and at one point Interim-Superintendent, Herrera retired to spend time with his wife Olga Herrera and children. Herrera passed away in 2016, but the legacy he left behind continues to inspire many in United ISD.
