(Laredo, Texas)-Students at Killam Elementary rocked out in style this morning during a Reading Pep-Rally hosted to kick off United ISD’s Accelerated Reading Program. The Accelerated Reading Program, or AR as it’s known to students, is an online tool educators use to motivate, monitor and manage independent reading to accelerate reading growth.
“What better way to celebrate reading and kick off the start of our AR Program this year than to invite our students to dress up as their favorite book character and participate in some fun activities with their peers,” said Mr. Palizo, Killam Elementary Principal.
To wrap up the event, students were invited to a special reading of Ready for School, Murphy by KGNS News Anchor Richard “Heatwave” Berler as part of Disney’s Magic of Storytelling Event.
Students visited their Library where Campus Librarian Annette Abdallah created a Disney inspired reading area filled with books, special reading nooks, and stuffed animals students could use as reading buddies. Visitors and students alike were in awe with all the special touches they could see around the Library. One student was overheard saying, “It was so much fun to see Heatwave at our school!”
Killam Elementary School is the third stop for KGNS reporters. Students received over 100 books as part of a donation from KGNS-Pro8 News.
