The District Attorney’s Office has secured a guilty plea in its case against Alexis Diaz-Reyes, 25, for the death of Irvin Garza.

On January 31, 2014, Alexis Diaz-Reyes, Guillermo Cantu and Irvin Garza left a party after an argument ensued and drove off in a gray Ford Expedition in Zapata, Texas. While in the vehicle, Diaz-Reyes asked Cantu for the gun that Garza had revealed he had during the party. When attempting to unload the gun, it accidentally went off striking Garza. Diaz-Reyes then noticed that Garza had blood on his body and that he was unresponsive. He and Cantu decided to take Garza’s body to a ranch located in Bustamante, Texas.

Both men dragged Garza out from the vehicle and into the brush before returning to Zapata, Texas. The body was found in late March after Diaz-Reyes confessed during a video interview while he was detained for questioning.

Alexis Diaz-Reyes plead guilty to one count of manslaughter, a second-degree felony in the State of Texas, He was sentenced to 15 years to serve before the 49th District Court Judge Joe Lopez in Zapata, Texas.

Assistant District Attorneys Pete Garza and Paul Thomson prosecuted the case for the State.
