WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX-15) issued the following statement on the firing of FBI Director James Comey and the need for a special counsel to investigate Russia’s meddling in the 2016 General Election:
“The timing of Director Comey’s firing is questionable and raises doubts about the current Administration’s commitment to transparency. I call on President Trump to appoint an independent, level-headed individual who is familiar with law enforcement, cybersecurity and national intelligence – an individual who upholds the letter of the law even when it comes in conflict with the wishes of the president. The American people want answers on the issue of Russia’s meddling, and we need to provide those answers to them in a timely manner. We need a special counsel who is objective, fair, honest, and forthcoming. Anything less than that is unacceptable.”
