H.E.B. Surprises/Announces UISD Principal as Finalist in “2017 H.E.B. Excellence in Education Awards”

H.E.B. Names United ISD, School Principal Dr. Myrtha Villarreal of Colonel Santos Elementary School as a finalist for the 2017 H.E.B. Excellence in Education Awards

Since 2002. the H.E.B. Excellence in Education Awards has been the largest awards program in Texas where educators across the state have been awarded with over $500,000 in cash prizes. The application process selects educators who exhibit characteristics of exemplary leadership in both their schools and district.

Students gathered for a pep-rally style assembly for what they thought was a visit from the Texas Department of Agriculture. Instead, Regional and Local (Store #8) H.E.B. representatives, along with H.E. Buddy, made their last stop to United Independent School District. Together with students, various district officials, and Dr. Villarreal’s family, Linda Tovar Senior Manager of Public Affairs for H.E.B. presented Dr. Villarreal with flowers, various gifts, and a $1,000 check for herself and a $2,500 dollar check for her school.

“This is such an honor for me and our school. I am deeply humbled by this surprise. I love my students, I love my teachers, and I love my staff. I am extremely blessed and thankful to H.E.B. and my colleagues for this honor,” stated Dr. Villarreal.

Villarreal-1Dr. Myrtha Villarreal has been in the education profession for 25 years. She has moved up the ranks from teacher, assistant principal to her current position as principal of Colonel Santos Benavides Elementary School, a continuous high performing Pk-5th grade campus.

“We are extremely pleased and proud of Dr. Villarreal. She is an incredible principal in our district. We are confident that she will represent United ISD very well up in Austin,” stated Roberto J. Santos, Superintendent of Schools for United ISD.

Dr. Villarreal is among 39 educators across the states that have been named as a finalist with this prestigious award. Recipients of the H.E.B. Excellence in Education Awards are treated to a weekend of fun-filled events that closes with a dinner and reception where one lucky educator is named 2017 H.E.B. Excellence in Education Award, is awarded a $10,000 check for his/herself and a $25,000 check for their school. Overall statewide winners will be announced in May during a reception held in Austin, Texas.
