Alexander alumni and United ISD League of Legends inductee Kaleb Canales directed the camps with some assistance from United ISD and LISD coaches. Canales, who is celebrating his 14th year in the N.B.A.and his fourth year as Assistant Coach for the Dallas Mavericks, said that camp activities were programmed to teach the fundamentals of basketball to children ages 5 to 13 years of age. In an interview conducted for United Insider, Canales recalled his years at Alexander high school with great fondness, and credited much of his success to the Alexander coaches who taught him how to transform his dreams into success.

“My coaches were great role models. They showed me how to play well, and in the process, taught me some valuable life lessons. I am very pleased to share what I’ve learned with the next generation of athletes”, said Canales. “I”d like to thank Alexander Principal Ernesto Sandoval Jr. for supporting the Assist 13 program, and for allowing us to use his facilities” he concluded.

The Assist 13 Foundation is committed to utilizing the game of basketball as a vehicle to motivate and encourage the youth of Laredo and surrounding area to succeed as athletes, as students, and as caretakers of our community. The foundation’s mantra is that every child and young adult should have the opportunity to dream big.
