American Association Game Recaps for Saturday August 27th

Sioux Falls 5, Fargo-Moorhead 4

 The Sioux Falls Canaries scored four runs in the eighth inning to rally from a 4-1 deficit and beat Fargo-Moorhead by a 5-4 score. Sioux Falls 1B Jake Taylor led the way offensively as he went 2-for-5 with a big eighth inning home run and two RBI. Canaries 2B B.J. Guinn drew a pair of walks and scored twice while DH J.C. Linares had three hits in four at-bats. Sioux Falls starting pitcher Joe Bircher tossed seven innings and picked up his fifth win of the year. Bircher allowed four earned runs on eight hits and struck out nine batters. For the RedHawks in defeat, DH K.D. Kang had a 2-for-4 day with a home run.

 Lincoln 4, St. Paul 0

 Lincoln starting pitcher Shairon Martis and two relievers combined on a six-hit shutout as the Saltdogs defeated St. Paul, 4-0. Martis went the first seven innings of the game giving up four hits and a pair of walks to go along with nine strikeouts. The righty picked up the victory and is now 9-7 on the year. The two relievers, J.R. Bunda and Evan Reed, each allowed a hit in an inning of work with Reed notching his 19th save of the season. Offensively for Lincoln, RF Jon Smith went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI while 2B Cesar Valera chipped in with a hit and plated two runs.

 Winnipeg 10, Sioux City 4

 The Winnipeg Goldeyes scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead and would go on from there to down Sioux City, 10-4. Winnipeg was led offensively by CF Reggie Abercrombie who went 3-for-5 with a triple, a run scored and two RBI. Goldeyes 1B David Rohm collected a pair of hits and scored two runs while 3B Wes Darvill chipped in with two walks and a three-run double. Winnipeg starting pitcher Edwin Carl notched the victory and is now 9-6 on the season. Carl allowed an earned run on five hits with six strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings pitched. The win by the Goldeyes along with the loss by St. Paul puts Winnipeg three back of the Saints with eight games remaining.

 Gary SouthShore 12, Kansas City 5

 Gary SouthShore tallied seven big runs in the fifth inning to overcome an early deficit and beat Kansas City by a 12-5 final. The RailCats pounded out 13 hits in the contest with four batters collecting at least two. Gary SouthShore DH Frank Martinez and CF/RF Chase Harriswent a combined 4-for-9 at the plate with four runs scored and eight RBI. Martinez also chipped in a three-run blast with 2B John Holland adding a pair of hits and plating two runs. RailCats starting pitcher Travis McGee allowed five earned runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings pitched to nab his fourth win. The victories by Gary SouthShore and Lincoln coupled with the loss by Sioux City give the RailCats a ½ game lead over Lincoln and a 1 ½ game advantage over the Explorers in the race for the Central Division.

 Joplin 3, Laredo 1

 Joplin CF KC Huth and 1B Geraldo Valentin hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning to give the Blasters a 2-0 advantage and that is all they would need as they defeated Laredo, 3-1. Valentin was the star for Joplin offensively as he went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of home runs. Blasters starting pitcher Santos Arias threw six solid innings in collecting his second win of the season. Arias gave up an earned run on four hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts. Joplin reliever Roby Romero tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to notch his second save.

 Texas 4, Wichita 2

 Texas scored two runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead and that proved to be the difference in the game as they beat Wichita by a 4-2 score. The AirHogs collected 11 hits in the contest and was led by 1B Devon Rodriguez who had a 3-for-4 game with a walk and two RBI. Texas CF Kenny Peoples-Walls had two hits in four at-bats with a triple and a run batted in while 3B Cory Morales chipped in with a double and plated a run. AirHogs starting pitcher Griffin Russell won his second straight outing and picked up his third victory of the season. Russell allowed two earned runs on six hits in six innings of work.
