Sunday Afternoon Game Recaps for Sunday July 31st


Winnipeg 2, Kansas City 0

Winnipeg starting pitcher Edwin Carl and reliever Eric Eadington combined on a two-hit shutout as the Goldeyes downed the Kansas City T-Bones, 2-0. Carl notched his sixth win of the season as he tossed the first six innings allowing the two hits and four walks while fanning six Kansas City batters. Eadington notched his fourth save as he threw the final three innings giving up a pair of walks and striking out three hitters. Offensively for Winnipeg, 3B Wes Darvill went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI while CF Reggie Abercrombie and RF Josh Romanski each scored a run. With the victory, the Goldeyes sweep the series and head into the all-star break on a four game winning streak.
Sioux City 6, Sioux Falls 5

Second baseman Tommy Mendonca’s RBI single in the sixth inning proved to be the difference in the game as the Sioux City Explorers edged the Sioux Falls Canaries, 6-5. Sioux City jumped out to a 5-1 lead after three innings of play only to Sioux Falls rally and cut the deficit to 5-4 going into the bottom of the sixth. The Explorers added the run in the sixth to push the lead to 6-4 and the Canaries could only plate one more run in the contest giving Sioux City the victory. Mendonca had three hits in the game while DH LeVon Washington added two hits, two runs and a RBI. Explorers starting pitcher Bubba Maxwell notched the victory as he went six innings giving up three earned runs on seven hits and striking out six batters.
St. Paul 8, Lincoln 3

St. Paul jumped out in front 4-0 after four innings of play and would never look back as they defeated the Lincoln Saltdogs by the score of 8-3. The Saints had 13 hits in the contest and was led by SS Tony Thomas who went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. St. Paul leadoff hitter Alonzo Harris and 2B Tanner Vavra each had three hits and scored two runs while LF Brady Burzynski drove in a pair of runs in a 1-for-4 day. Saints starting pitcher John Straka tossed seven strong innings in earning his ninth win of the year. Straka gave up two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. With the win, St. Paul heads into the all-star break with a league best 47-22 record.

Gary SouthShore 9, Texas 8

The Gary SouthShore RailCats scored a run in the sixth inning to take a 9-6 lead and that would be the difference as they held on for a 9-8 win over the Texas AirHogs. Gary SouthShore pounded out 13 hits in the contest with four batters having multi-hit games. RailCats DH Frank Martinez had a tremendous game offensively going 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI. Gary SouthShore RF Cameron Newell banged out three hits, scored two runs and drove in a pair while LF Elbert Devarie plated two runs in a 1-for-4 game. RailCats pitcher Travis McGee struck out four batters in 2 2/3 innings pitched to pick-up his third win of the year. McGee gave up an earned run on three hits.
